Aluminum foil is used in electrolytic capacitors to store electrical charge. Given that storage capacity is directly proportional to surface area, the challenge is to use electrical and chemical means to increase the surface area from ten times to one hundred times. Imitation gold leaf is made from copper-zinc alloy. It is remarkably similar in color to proper gold leaf. Imitation gold leaf is often used as an inexpensive substitute for interior decoration.
